Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk: Shimizu Saki x Nakajima Saki

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between various pairings of the girls, covering all 66 possible combinations. In the process of reading this book, I'll be putting up some highlights as I read through the interviews.

Shimizu Saki X Nakajima Saki

↔↔↔

According to what I've heard, the 2 of you are crybabies.

Nakajima: I've only just recently found out that ShimiSaki-chan's a crybaby. You once cried at a hotel, didn't you? We were all having our meals, and when I talked about something that was a bit serious, she suddenly cried. She could empathise so much with what I was talking about that she cried, it made me wonder, how much of a crybaby is she? Yet, even I myself wasn't even crying though!? (laughs)

Shimizu: I cry immediately (laughs). I cry when I'm happy, I cry when I'm sad, I cry when I get told off. I express all my emotions by crying (laughs). Nacky doesn't really seem like a crybaby though.

↔↔↔

Nakajima: What made me cry a lot recently was the flag performance we did for 'Midnight Temptation' at ℃-ute's tour ('℃-ute Concert Tour 2012 Haru Natsu ~Utsukushikutte Gomenne~'). I could do it at rehearsals, but I couldn't pull it off at the run-through rehearsals, so I got scared and cried a lot. When you cry, there are times when you know you're crying, and there are times when the tears just flow, right? This was one of the times where it just flowed, I didn't know I was crying. The tears were just streaming out as I stood on-stage, it was inexcusable,

Momochi no Kimochi: Rice Cooker (Essay #5/22)

The rice cooker in the Tsugunaga household is the best.
Mama went against our family's opposition
And resolutely bought a slightly expensive cooker,
But that was the correct thing to do!

The rice gets so fluffy and delicious,
That it's virtually incomparable to the rice we had before!

Even day old rice,
Remains just as white and moist
(↑Pun not intended ♥)

Particularly because the Tsugunaga household are rice eaters,
It pumped up our family.
I feel like it's doubled all our power.

If your rice changes,
Your life will change.
If there's something worrying you,
Perhaps it might be good to try a change of rice cooker.

{Note: This translator failed to figure what the unintended pun was}

Yajima Maimi X Okai Chisato

While they're different types, Yajima and Okai are good at sports, with quick reflexes.
Yet, for some reason, they empathise with one another over being late and forgetting things?

ηηη

It's said that the 2 of you are good at sports, but what do you yourselves think?

Okai: Yaji's amazing. I think I'll never ever be able to beat her.

Yajima: Really? That can't be the case.

Okai: It's not like I've got particularly good reflexes. In the end, it's half-baked. Even when I run, I'm not fast, nor am I slow, it only seems like I'm capable because I'm at the halfway mark. It doesn't mean I'm good at sports.

Yajima: How about in P.E. classes at school?

Okai: My grades for P.E. are on the good side, but it's not like I'm really capable. If I had a match with the other members, I think the match would end in a lame loss. For Yaji, whatever you do, on the whole, it's at a high level.

Yajima: I'm not really great at sports, but I enjoy moving my body. As for Chissa, I thought that you'd definitely be good at sports.

New Faces: Song you'd like to sing (H!P Maruwakari Summer 2015)

The HaroPuro MaruWakari Books are released in conjunction with the twice-yearly Hello! Con tours. The contents usually take the form of questionnaires to the members, mainly asking about other members.

As new additions to H!P, the Kobushi and Tsubaki Factories also get an additional questionnaire - the 'New Face Maruwakari Special''.

Q1. Song I'd like to sing on-stage

Fujii Rio'16-sai no Koi Nante' with Yajima Maimi-san! At the time, it was sung by Abe Natsumi-san in her 20s and a 16 year old Yajima-san, so now I'd like the 16 year old me to sing it with Yajima-san in her 20s.

Hirose Ayaka: I'd like to try singing 'Gatamekira' with Nonaka Miki-chan!! It might be interesting as our vocal qualities differ completely.

Nomura MinamiI'd like to try singing 'Dot Bikini' with Wada Ayaka-san. It's the first CD I ever bought in my life. Wada-san is my oshimen!

Ogawa RenaI'd like to sing Morning Musume。´15-san's 'Namidacchi'. The lyrics are great and emotionally moving, so I'd like to try singing it.

Hamaura Ayano'Shabondama' with Oda Sakura-chan. 'Gatamekira' with Murota Mizuki-chan and Miyamoto Karin-chan. That's what I'd like to sing.

Taguchi NatsumiI'd like to try singing 'Hatsukoi Cider' with Suzuki Airi-san. Suzuki-san is really cute and lovely when she sings that song, so I'd like to try it on the same stage with her!

Wada SakurakoMorning Musume。-san's 'Shabondama'. I'd like to try singing such a cool song with all my heart.

Inoue ReiI'd like to sing 'Kokoro no Sakebi wo Uta ni shitemita' with ℃-ute-san.

Q1. Song I'd like to sing on-stage

Ogata RisaI'd like to sing Morning Musume。-san's 'Happy Daisakusen' with all the members of Hello! Project. I think it'll pump up the concert.

Yamagishi Riko℃-ute-san's 'Akogare My Star'. I think that up-tempo songs are difficult but cool. As for who I'd like to perform it with, it'd be Ikuta Erina-san, Ishida Ayumi-san, Fukuda Kanon-san, Murota Mizuki-san, Miyamoto Karin-san, Uemura Akari-san.

Niinuma KisoraYamaki Risa-chan. It's my dream to have something like a birthday event together! The song would be ℃-ute-san's 'Kanashiki Amefuri'!!

Tanimoto AmiI'd like to sing 'Renai Revolution 21' with all of Hello! Project.

Kishimoto YumenoI'd like to try singing Tsugunaga Momoko-san and Natsuyaki Miyabi-san's duet 'Ai ha Ai desho' with Takagi Sayuki-san. I'll frantically be rushing after Takagi-san , but it would be a good learning experience.

Asakura KikiI'd like Tsubaki Factory to try out 'Kimagure Princess'. But it doesn't fit our current atmosphere, so 3 years in the future might be better (laughs).

Notes and observations:
  • Mentioned songs by group:
    MentionsGroup
    6Morning Musume。
    3℃-ute
    2Taiyou to Ciscomoon
1Berryz Kobo, Buono!, S/mileage, Special Single
Gatamekira and Shabondama were both mentioned twice
  • I suspect that the question was changed, because the way Niinuma answers doesn't make sense. Also, there seems to be an implicit suggestion that they should mention who they'd like to perform with.
    MentionsGroup
    3℃-ute, Morning Musume。, ANGERME, Juice=Juice
    2H!P, did not mention anyone
    1Country Girls, Tsubaki Factory
Only girls mentioned twice were Murotan and Karin-chan, both by Hamachan and RikoRiko
  • Fujidon brought up '16sai no Koi Nante'. If Maimi lasts in H!P until 2018, here's the current list of members that'll be 16 while Maimi's 26: Wada Sakurako, Sasaki Rikako, Yanagawa Nanami, Ozeki Mai, Haga Akane, Funaki Musubu. Ozeki Mai celebrates her birthday in the same month as Maimi, if that counts for anything.

Tsugunaga Momoko X Nakajima Saki

♥♥♥

Speaking of which, Nakajima-san's a frank character, while Tsugunaga-san is like an idol that's straight out of an illustration. It's quite the contrast.

Tsugunaga: Nacky, are you of the artiste persuasion? The idol persuasion?

Nakajima: Personally, I'd like to become an artiste, and I'd like to become someone of the K-Pop persuasion who can pull of cute as well as cool songs.

Tsugunaga: I see, that's how it is.

♥♥♥

Tsugunaga: Idol = cute, that's an absolute requirement [to be an idol]. The definition of cute may differ from person to person, but cuteness is the major premise.

Nakajima: However, H!P gets cool as well as cute songs, don't we? In that case, we can't be missing our cuteness, so it's difficult. Thinking about it though, even when singing cool songs, do things balance out with this hairstyle (the Momochi Musubi)?

Tsugunaga: For that, at our recent tour ('Berryz Kobo concert tour 2012 Haru ~Berryz Station~'), there's a sexy dance where we make use of chairs. Dancing with me were (Shimizu) Saki-chan and Miya, who'd do things like head-banging, their hair going everywhere, but even if I head-banged, my hair wouldn't budge (laughs). And then I got told off by our dance sensei, telling me 'Can't you let your hair down just for this song?', but I was like 'That's impossible, I've put my bets on my hairdo'. It would take away from my cuteness. I'll make facial expressions and move my body with everything I've got, but there are things that I ultimately won't give up.

On the other hand, Saki-chan, what do you do when the time comes around for you to do cute songs?

Nakajima: I like them well enough to sing them, but since there's more room to grow with cool songs, I enjoy it enthusiastically. But I get complimented on cute songs, while I don't get praise for cool songs, for some reason. Even though I'm the type that doesn't grow if I don't receive praise.

Tsugunaga: I get what you mean. I don't get praised by anyone either. The usual pattern is me getting told off for cool songs, while getting sniggered at when it comes to cute songs.

♥♥♥

Tsugunaga-san, why are you so particular about idols?

Tsugunaga: I think it's my calling.

Nakajima: Why did you apply for the 'Hello! Project Kids audition'?

Tsugunaga: I watched Tsuji-san eat delicious stuff on TV, which I thought was great, so I applied (laughs). Therefore, it wasn't that I had awareness of being an idol, however, I completely got into it.

Coming back to it, what do you think is the most important thing for an idol?

[...]

Tsugunaga: I treat all of mankind impartially. Be it Tsunku♂-san, or even the fans, everyone's the same. Of course I use polite language with those above my station, but my fundamental stance is that 'Everyone loves Momochi'.

Nakajima: Ooh, I see.

Tsugunaga: Because I'm everyone's idol, my theme is 'impartiality'.

♥♥♥

Tsugunaga: One of the things that made me to want to be called Momochi was Nacky. Seeing the fans call out 'Nacky' at concerts, I thought it was great, it made me want to have a pet name too. So for me, Nacky's presence was pretty big (laughs).

Nakajima: I get called Nacky when I'm at work, but at school, I get called Saki by my friends at school. And, one day, when a school friend referred to me as Nacky, it was like I was being seen as my idol self, I got really self-concious. At the time, I really thought that in my heart, 'Nacky = idol'.

Tsugunaga: Something that surprised me was that, as Nacky keeps saying that you're good-for-nothing at ℃-ute concerts, the fans started a 'good-for-nothing' call, that was really novel.

Nakajima: There was a time when they said that (laughs).

Tsugunaga: I really got a shock when once, at a Berryz Kobo concert, the guests made a 'soft-in-the-head' call for me, I really felt like crying at the time. So seeing the sight of Nacky doing her best even when you're being told that you're good-for-nothing, I thought that Nacky was strong.

It's tough to be an idol.

Nakajima: I think that the idols of the present are really close to the fans. Through avenues like blogging, we lay bare out daily activities.

Tsugunaga: I'm sorry, I can't approve of that. I don't blog.

Nakajima: Why? Do you have an aversion to it?

Tsugunaga: It's because I think that having a sense of distance is important.

Momcohi no Kimochi: Gossip (Essay #4/22)

The other day, I met a staff-san who asked,
'Momochi san, does your family live in poverty?',
Which really gave me a shock.

When I asked back,
'Why do you ask that?',
They replied
'It was on the Internet'.
I immediately tried looking it up,
And there, the lookup keywords were
'Momochi Mechaike',
'Momochi university ',
'Momochi poverty ',
They were lined up that, just like it was nothing.

Once again, I got a shock!!
Furthermore, when I investigated into it,
Many rumours about poverty came out of the blue,
Like 'She uses a close-by river to bathe',
Or 'She stole the bicycles of members of Berryz Kobo', et cetera......

Of course, everyone tells these quirky tales,
But since there are also some people who believe it,
Gossip can turn out to be scary, right?

However, while it's scary when's it turned on you,
It's so fun to do
That it's not easy to quit,
So even I'm troubled about it ♥

The important feelings of leaving behind her beloved H!P that she'd like to convey to her beloved Kumai-san - Top Yell November 2015

Amongst the readers. there may be people who have no idea why Kumai-san is here. Please give an explanation, even a brief one would be fine, of the extent that Kumai-san has an essential place within Fukuda-san's life as an idol.

Fukuda: That's right...... The first thing that made me like Berryz Kobo-san is their ages, that played a big part. Up to then, idols had been like older oneesans, but [Berryz Kobo-san] were in my generation, people who I might have been friends with had we gone to the same school, they were shining. Seeing that, it gave me a push, like 'I should do my best too'...... They gave me courage. Among them was Kumai-san...... Before I knew it, my eyes just kept following Kumai-san. It's always been that way, ever since the times of 'Anata Nashi de ha Ikite Yukenai'. I'm fickle when it comes to idols, immediately oshihen-ing. However, why is it that Kumai-san's the only the only one I've continued to oshi? I thought about it a week ago, while I was on the Shinkansen. What I noticed is that, idols change and develop, in looks, expression, and singing, right? But for Kumai-san, despite going through those sorts of external changes, within her, since the days of her début, her core of being Kumai Yurina-san has never wavered. I think that it's because of that that my support for her has never changed. If it were an anime, it would be fine to remain unchanged, but part of the attraction of idols is that they change. But, as a fan, there's that delicate line of not wanting them to change as well. On that point, Kumai-san always treads exactly on it, keeping to that line.

Although I said that you could be brief (bitter laugh). However, Fukuda-san, you're very knowledgeable about idols in general. What was it that made Kumai-san special?

Fukuda: Even though she's such a wonderful person, she doesn't put on airs! Even though she has a cool look on her face in photos, when you talk with her, she's airy and adorable. Being the pioneer for that gap got me excited!

Kumai: It's kind of embarrassing. It's like Kanon knows me from head to toe. Even when I think about myself, I'm unable to put it that well in words, so instead, this is a good reference for me (laughs).

It's been 11 years in the past since Fukuda-san entered in the 1st generation of the H!P Eggs. Kumai-san, surely you didn't have an impression of Fukuda-san at the time?

Kumai: Ah, but I remember that in the middle of the Yokohama Arena rehearsals, Kanon talked with Maasa, who's good in the field of stage-acting.

Fukuda: I joined in primary 4th, and the system was that those in primary 3rd and below couldn't appear at concerts, so I was the smallest. There, everyone talked to me. As Eggs, there's virtually no opportunities to interact, so it made me really happy when a senpai would talk to me. Like, 'The people I've watched on TV are talking to me!'

You weren't scared of Berryz Kobo at the time?

Fukuda: I wasn't scared at the time (laughs).
