Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk 30: Sugaya Risako x Hagiwara Mai

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between various pairings of the girls, covering all 66 possible combinations. In the process of reading this book, I'll be putting up some highlights as I read through the interviews.

Sugaya Risako X Hagiwara Mai

Risako-chan and Mai-chan, you're both the youngest in your respective groups. How old were the two of you when you entered the Hello! Project Kids?

Sugaya: I was eight, and Mai was six.

Hagiwara: My first impression was that a girl who was cute like crazy had showed up. So cute that I had to ask myself, 'What's up with this girl?' Her skin was oh-so-fair, pure white, like snow.

Sugaya: You're exaggerating (laughs). Mai was really tiny and adorable. While the first time we interacted was during the movie 'Mini Moni。 jya Movie Okashi na Daibouken!', I got the impression that you were always running around. The tiny voice you used when you spoke was also adorable, you were such the little sister.

Being small, did you face any hardships?

Hagiwara: What I remember was dancing. Our teachers told me that since my body was small, I had to dance in a big way, another person's worth, so I danced in such a huge way that it was almost unnatural.

Sugaya: I've never been told to dance in a big way, but I remember being really bad at it. So I feel like I caused trouble to the rest, as they had to follow along.

Nakajima Saki X Sugaya Risako

><(((°>

Looking as much as I can from the outside, there doesn't seem to be an easy-to-get common point between the two of you. But unexpectedly, you're good friends?

Nakajima: We had activities together as the unit 'Guardians 4', but didn't we start really talking with one another from the play 'Sengoku Jieitai'!?

Sugaya: Nope, you've got it wrong! It was the movie 'Ousama Game'. That's when we became good friends.

Either way, it's pretty recent. What did you think of one another in the past?

Nakajima: I thought that Risako was on good terms with (Suzuki) Airi. But that's because I'm the type of girl who's unable to get chummy with the girls of Berryz Kobo.

Sugaya: What 'type' is that supposed to be (laughs)!?

><(((°>

Sugaya: I thought that Nacky was really reserved. But when I tried talking to her, it turned out that she does as she pleases (laughs).

Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk 53: Yajima Maimi x Sugaya Risako

Yajima Maimi X Sugaya Risako

This may sound rude, but I get the strong impression that the 2 of you forget lyrics. Are the two of you aware about this?

Sugaya: About five to six years ago, I'm sure that I forgot lyrics due to nervousness, but that hasn't been the case recently. Actually, I now have so much fun standing on-stage that I don't skip lines, but there are times when I slip up a little (laughs).

♫♫♫

Sugaya: In cases when I slip up, the usual pattern is that I'll feel something's off, even though I might not know what it is. It's only once I've finished singing that I'll realise I made a mistake. But since I've already sung that part, I feel like the only thing that I can do is switch it up next time, to show the fans a good performance.

♫♫♫

Well, instead of songs, have there ever been times where you couldn't get your dance moves down?

Yajima: Previously, at ℃-ute's fan club bus tour, we had a set-up where we'd draw lots to see what song we would sing on that day. We thought about reviewing all of our songs since we'd have no idea what song would come out, but we had so many songs that I couldn't keep up. So I was the only one who didn't know my positioning on the day itself. Since at concerts, our positioning changes depending on the stage, I end up getting all mixed up.

Sugaya: But the others can remember theirs, right?

Yajima: Yup. So I really think that they're all amazing.

Sugaya: I keep making mistakes until the last moment, but I can pull it off at the real thing.

Yajima: You're the kind of person who's strong when it comes to the real thing. That's nice. I envy you.

Sugaya: Since I can't pull it off at rehearsals, I panic, but I review the performance by watching the DVD before going to bed, and then I end up being able to do it at the real thing.

Sugaya Risako X Okai Chisato

With slightly different characteristics from what you'd call an idol, these two talk about their view on idols.
They tell us about what they think of their positions over these 10 years.

It may be quite a sudden leap to start our discussion off like this, but everyone says that the two of you seem like the most likely people to be the first to get married in your own respective groups (laughs).

Okai: Is that so (laughs)? But I feel that Risako will get married before me.

Sugaya: Isn't there a pattern where everyone says that, but it actually ends up with that person being the last to get married (laughs)?

Okai: In 10 years time, we'll be almost in our thirties, and most people at that age will normally be married, so I'd like to have gotten married by then.

Sugaya: Since you have lots of siblings, I feel like you'll become a Mama with lots of children.

Okai: I feel like we'll mingle as fellow mothers. All of us with children will gather together.

Sugaya: But amongst the members of my group, Captain will definitely be late.

Okai: I feel that Miyabi-chan will somehow or the other be late as well. As for Kumai-chan, I feel like she on the other hand might get married before we know it.

Sugaya: I think that if someone's going to get married out of the blue, it'd unexpectedly be Momo (laughs). I think that Kumai-chan will be really late. I've been together with her all the time, so I know her, and Kumai-chan is the type of person that thinks very carefully. It would worry me if she rushed. I'd be shocked if Kumai-chan got married before me (laughs).

Okai: I feel that ℃-ute's Yaji will unexpectedly get married early. I feel that we'd be be fine with Yaji getting married, and that we'd start saying things like 'It's about time to think about marriage'.

The 2 of them who are un-idol-like
What are their thoughts on what a proper idol is?

Thank you very much for the analysis (laughs). Talking about marriage, we started on a topic that in a way is a taboo discussion for idols, but I think if it's the 2 of you, the fans will be able to read this without suspicions.

Okai: That does seem so (laughs).

Sugaya: I really get what you mean (laughs).

Shimizu Saki X Sugaya Risako

Do you remember your first appearance as the Hello! Project Kids, at 'Hello! Project 2003 Winter ~Tanoshinjattemasu!~'?

Shimizu: We were still so small back then, so we did it without thinking. The 15 of us made our appearance dressed as angels......

Sugaya: Watching it now, it's like, why angels!? (laughs).

Shimizu: That's right. It had a strong impact (laughs). At any rate, I remember doing just what we were told to do, with everything we had.

Your first concert as Berryz Kobo was 2004's 'W Standby! Double U & Berryz Kobo'.

Shimizu: At the time, there was such a feeling of nervousness. There were members who couldn't stand on-stage because they were hyperventilating.

■■■

Shimizu: Tsuji (Nozomi)-san was concerned about us, and was open for advice, 'If you've got anything, Non will listen to you!' As for rehearsals, Berryz Kobo would rehearse with Berryz Kobo, we had but a few rehearsals together with W-san, which was also worrying.......

Sugaya: I had to sing together with Kago (Ai)-san, but I couldn't sing well, and I kept being taught by Kago-san. I remember that well, even now.

Tsugunaga Momoko X Sugaya Risako

♥♥♥

Tsugunaga: I have no idea what to do when I have days off, so I end up answering questionnaires for work or doing some graffiti for goods. Even while watching television, I often think about work.

Sugaya: I'd explode without rest days, so I hit my tipping point when I don't have days off. My body gets out of shape, my skin gets rough, it shows on my body. It makes me irritated, and I'd unintentionally have arguments with our manager-san, thinking that it wouldn't be possible for me to go on,

Tsugunaga-san, if you're working all the time, doesn't the stress build up ?

Tsugunaga: More than being stressed about having no breaks, I get irritated when I can't do anything.

Dance teacher SHE-sensei comments on the Berryz members - CDJournal Mar 2015

――We would like to ask sensei about the impressions you had while you were watching each and every member。

I guess we'll go by order of age.

Captain (Shimizu Saki) is serious.
Even from our first meeting, she'd ask for review sessions after we finished with rehearsals,
And despite being small, we had discussions about the things she was unclear on,
While we had conflicts at times, she's always been serious since back then.

I think that she's a good girl, be it at work or in her private life,
But roughly when she was a senior high student......
She became unexpectedly funny (laughs).
Doing funny faces and using a weird way of speaking, she liked funny things.
She discovered that aspect at the end of her teenage years though.
Since then, I've often messed around with Captain (laughs).
It's just that, her comicality doesn't really show on-stage, does it?
I think that it's not that she doesn't want to bring it out,
But it doesn't appear because she's in charge of all sorts of things.

Momo (Tsugunaga Momoko) is as she is.
That's probably everyone's impression of her.
She's got a high level of professionalism.
While I thought she was just a 'burikko' when she was small,
I think that she probably understands what the guests want the most,
And she studied up in order to understand them.

Recently, the girls have been proposing parts of their setlists at concerts and events,
But it's mostly led by Momo.
Like, how they'd like the stage direction to go.
She's not just making a fuss and having fun, she properly thinks it through.
But while it doesn't mean that the way she presents herself is just 'for business',
It normally does seem that way (laughs).

Also, I like Momo's butt. It's like pudding.
Let me talk about an amusing memory I have concerning her butt:
There was a time when her body was still expanding and growing a little.
As she was sitting down in a lady-like manner,
The back of her sweats ripped with a great sound. (laughs)
Her face went completely red. We had a great big laugh at that.

Kumai Yurina X Sugaya Risako

ʕ♡˙ᴥ˙♡ʔʕ♡˙ᴥ˙♡ʔʕ♡˙ᴥ˙♡ʔ

Compared to the past, have you become more able to control your feelings?

Sugaya: When we were small, I didn't understand anything at all, so I thought that everything I was told was correct. So maybe I was more stable in the past. But as age caught up to me, perhaps in the way of a grown-up (laughs), I learned what was good and what was bad, and would straight-up point out when something was wrong. I don't really put much thought into how people will see me. On those occasions, I don't know what I shouldn't say, and if I pay too much heed to myself, nothing would get across, so I end up butting heads. And so, from the eyes of those around me, perhaps it might seem like I have less control over my feelings now (laughs).

Kumai: I envy that Risako. Risako is really brimming with confidence, wherever we go, you're always dignified, you have an axis that doesn't waver. The basis for that axis is that you're clear about what you enjoy and what you don't. Perhaps due to that, you might appear to have turbulent emotions, but I really envy Risako, who can say things like that. Whatever happens, I'd be saying nothing but 'What should I do?' or 'OMG OMG'.

So, what if the outfits that had been prepared for you were in a colour that you don't look good in? What would you do?

Sugaya: I'd probably hate it.

Kumai: I'm the type of person who'd wear it, thinking that it can't be helped.

Sugaya: In the past, Kumai-chan didn't seem like she was full of confidence. But at times I'd catch a glimpse of your dancing or acting and think that you were brimming with confidence. That's been happening in these past one or two years. Compared to the past, I'd say that you were dignified, or perhaps, there were countless times when I thought you were really good. Something else that changed is that what you're thinking about shows in your face.

Kumai: Eh, really?

Sugaya: Yup. All the members have said so.

Kumai: I see. It surfaces without me noticing, perhaps. Those are waves of emotion as well, aren't they? I should fix that.

Sugaya: But for those around you, it's better to let it out just a bit. Because if you don't, it gets difficult to make an approach. Kumai-chan, ever since you really started letting your feelings show more, compared to the past, we can tell whether it seems like a good time to talk to you, or whether it's a good time to get close to you because you seem to be enjoying yourself. I prefer that. It's easier to get along with someone who's open.

Once you'd let out your emotions, it seems like you had confidence in singing and acting. What was the trigger?

Kumai: Last year we got to star in a movie (Ousama Game). The shooting was about a year ago, but at first I had no confidence with acting. But I thought about it as a chance that had been given to me, and I should seize it, which led to quite a big change. It was a high hurdle for me, but I guess I changed a bit. I started to enjoy acting, and there was the sense of accomplishment after working hard, so I guess I took a step forward.

Sugaya: That's right. Speaking of the film, I've appeared together in films with Kumai-chan in the past!

Kumai: In 'Hotaru no Hoshi' with Risako and myself and Okai-chan, the 3 of us appeared in the next movies, 'Koinu Dan no Monogatari' and 'Mini moni。jya Movie Okashi na Daibouken!' We fought a lot back then (laughs).

Sugaya: Over really silly things.

Kumai: We were in primary school, but they were low-level fights, as if we were preschoolers. But while Risako is close to me in age, you've always been a girl who's had a mature way of thinking, so there are times when that's helped me out. You can answer clearly, so you can state your opinion, saying things like 'Wouldn't this be better?' Because I've always been the type of person who hesitates easily.

ʕ♡˙ᴥ˙♡ʔʕ♡˙ᴥ˙♡ʔʕ♡˙ᴥ˙♡ʔ

The two of you are close in age, but after 10 years, how do you hope the other person will be like?

Sugaya: The 2 of us will be 29. I'd like to see Kumai-chan get married. Because I think that you're unexpectedly prudent, you'd look at things realistically rather than just looking at the ideals, and while the requirements may be strict (laughs), once that's been cleared, I'd like to see you get married and have children.

Kumai: I'd like to see Risako as a mother as well. I'd like you to go down your own path even as a married woman.

Sugaya: Just as Kumai-chan says, I'd always like to be myself. I hate the thinking that I should be prim and proper just because I've turned 30, and even when I've become a mother, I'd like to be fashionable as I always am. I'd like to appear how I want to no matter how old I am.

Kumai: I think that suits Risako. If you weren't an idol, I feel that you'd work at Harajuku. Doing hair or make-up, you'd change to match the day's fashion, and I think you'd completely suit the cosplay-ish Harajuku  as well..

Sugaya: Kumai-chan, you'll definitely be modelling. You've got a great figure, and you look so stylish even if the only thing you're doing is standing up, so I think it's completely the line of work for you. I think you'll gain currency in the world!

Kumai: No way, that's impossible (laughs).

Sugaya: So, Kumai-chan, in 10 years time, how would you like to be?

Kumai: Instead, I'd like to aim to become an unornamented woman. Because with my personality, it's impossible for me to be like Risako (laughs), I don't really dress up, and I'd like to become a person who can draw attention even without being stylish.

Sugaya Risako X Suzuki Airi

These 2 great songstresses who are of the same age, Sugaya and Suzuki, are the aces in their own respective groups.
Best friends? Rivals? Let's get closer to the relationship that the 2 of them have built up throughout these 10 years.

You're of different types, but there's this impression that the two of you stand at the forefront of BeriKyuu. Through this discussion, I'd like to ask you about the very first impression you had about one another.

Sugaya: Airi was a bit..... Heeheehee.

Suzuki: Wha? What (laughs)!?

Sugaya: A girl whose nostrils flared up (laughs).

Suzuki: Risako, you're such a meanie. You'd always keep telling me that my nostrils were bigger than my eyes (laughs)!

Sugaya: No, I thought it was cute. Your nose would twitch when you talked, and your nostrils would flare up when you laughed. That's the impression I had.

Suzuki: I was together with Risako at the 4th judging round of the 'Hello! Project Kids Audition', and while she had a broken limb (laughs), I thought that she was a girl who was as cute as a doll. I remember us talking about being the same age, and that we were both Aries. We had lots of things in common. Even the names of our younger brothers were similar.

Sugaya: It was quite the coincidence (laughs).

Suzuki: It only differs by a single character. And so, our brothers both became friends as well. But ever since we were split into Berryz Kobo and ℃-ute, they haven't had time to meet up. In the past, our mothers would drop us off, so they never got to hang out with just the 2 of them.

Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk: Natsuyaki Miyabi x Sugaya Risako

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between various pairings of the girls, covering all 66 possible combinations. In the process of reading this book, I'll be putting up some highlights as I read through the interviews.

Natsuyaki Miyabi X Sugaya Risako

╫╫╫

Were you close since 10 years ago?

Natsuyaki: That's right. Even the fans said that 'Risako and Miya are always together', and if you were to look at photos from the past, there really are a lot that capture the 2 of us, we were together so much that we really were like sisters. I think it's amazing that we've continued that way since we were small.

Sugaya: In Berryz Kobo, I really get spoiled by Captain and Miya. Captain spoils me, but Miya would say 'Do it properly!, just like an oneechan.

Natsuyaki: When I'm mad, I'm mad. Like 'Risako, that's no good', in a serious tone.

Sugaya: You'd scold me, but you'd also listen to what I had to say and sympathise with me. I'm the oldest girl at home, so I think it would be really great to have an oneechan like this.

Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk: Sudo Maasa x Sugaya Risako

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between pairs of girls, covering all 66 possible combinations of them. I'm currently in the middle of reading this book, and would like to share some highlights from some of the interviews.

Sudo Maasa X Sugaya Risako

While you're in the same group, I think that the two of you specialise in different fields. Firstly, from Maasa-chan's point of view, what do you think of Risako-chan's singing?

Sudo: I've always thought that Risako was amazing, even from when we were in primary school. Her singing is so intense that it makes you see visions, your eyes get drawn to her, like 'That's a great expression she has on her face.'  I particularly like her facial expression when she sings 'Makenaiwa' in 'Baka ni Shinaide'. It's great how she looks straight at the camera (laughs). It's like you're really acting out the world of the song, and your voice draws us into that world view.

Sugaya: I had no idea about that. There's so many other things I'm thinking about, like what's the next line, or how do I do this move, so I can't even think about the world of the song....... (laughs).

☻☻☻

Well then, from Risako-chan's point of view, what do you think of Maasa-chan's acting?

Sugaya: Maa gets lots of cool roles. You were really cool in the play 'Thank You Very Berry', where you came out wearing a sarashi wrap and a gakuran. It was a role that only Maa could do. You can't do cute roles, huh?

Sudo: Yup, I can't (laughs).

☻☻☻

Sugaya: I was together with Maa for 'Mini Moni The Movie Okashi na Daibouken!', and we became close. We were quiet at first and didn't talk at all, so I have no idea how we linked up (laughs). But she was the oldest among the members that were in the movie, so she was like our mother, bringing us together. We've always been together, and I think Maa's the only one I haven't quarrelled with. We've maintained our good relationship, and 10 years have passed in the blink of an eye. For me, Maa is Berryz Kobo's vice leader (laughs)*. [...] Miya was like an oneechan too, but there were times when we were forsaken by Miya (laughs). We often got told off. That made me happy though (laughs).

*Natsuyaki Miyabi was nominated sub-captain of Berryz Kobo in 2013, a year after this book was published

[...]

Sudo: For me, [Risako] is a really soothing presence. It was that way even during 'MiniMoni......', but everything you do is so cute, it's like I'd forgive whatever pranks you'd pull. It made me happy that you came to me with a 'Mama, mama', in order to be spoiled. Now you've grown-up, that little devilishness has increased (laughs).

Sugaya: Little devil? Not a devil (laughs)?

Sudo~:  A little devil (laughs)! Don't change that part of you that always soothes me, okay?

Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk: Tokunaga Chinami x Sugaya Risako

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between pairs of girls, covering all 66 possible combinations of them.

Tokunaga Chinami X Sugaya Risako

 +++

---The 2 of you have a reputation of being a pair of close friends, but at the same time, it seems that you're known as 'a clamorous pair' (laughs). Are you always together?

Tokunaga: If I had to say, generally, when we're travelling and staying at hotels, we stick together (laughs). It's scary to stay alone, we'd stay over in each other's rooms.

Sugaya: We did 'cup ramen gatherings'.

Tokunaga: That's right! The 2 of us like ramen, so after concerts, when we're travelling, we'd pick out our favourite cup ramens at the store and eat them. Then, we'd compete to see whose cup ramen was more delicious (laughs).

Sugaya: We'd get even more excited as it got later into the night, messing around.

Tokunaga: This year, I welcomed in the New Year together with Risako. We were staying over at a hotel for work, and they had prepared a room for each of us, but we got to talking, and were like, 'Wouldn't it be sad to spend the New Year alone?', Risako came to my room, and we did the countdown together. It got pretty roused up after that.

 +++

--- Risako-chan, from your perspective, what's an unexpected side [of Chinami]?

Sugaya: It may seem that she does as she pleases, is a bit of a fool, and you'd have no idea what she's thinking about, but she actually thinks about those around her more than anyone else. And she gives a right and proper tsukkomi to Momo.

Tokunaga: It's really tiring though (laughs).

Sugaya: If we're not talking about studies, she's unexpectedly smart. She's quick-witted, warm person.

Sugaya Risako: Berryz Kobo Last Maruwakari Special (H!P Maruwakari Winter 2015

The HaroPuro MaruWakari Books are released in conjunction with the twice-yearly Hello! Con tours. The contents usually take the form of questionnaires to the members, asking about other members.
This one, which came out for the 2015 Winter Hello! Cons, would be Berryz' last as well as Country Girls' first. It also pre-dates Kobushi Factory, who were announced at that Hello! Con itself. Thus, the usual questionnaires are supplemented with a Berryz Kobo Last Maruwakari special as well as a new faces special (MM 12ki, S/mileage 3ki, the 5 new Country Girls).

This questions come from the Berryz Kobo Last Maruwakari special, where we get one last, deep insight into the girls before their hiatus.

Q1. BEST 3: Favourite Berryz Kobo songs!
'Koishiteru Toki ha Itsumo...'
The lyrics, the melody, I like everything about it. I often listen to it when I want to be soothed.
'Masshiroi Ano Kumo'
I love ballads, and I really like its mellowness.
'Massugu na Watashi'
There are lottttts of parts where I'm moved by the lyrics, and I'm sobbing before I know it.

Q2. The activity that left the biggest impression after 10 years of activities as Berryz Kobo
Our Saitama Super Arena concert. Even now, I can't forget how emotionally moving it was. It was a day of joy. The play 'Warera Jeanne'. At any rate, there were lots of things to memorise, and it was truly a challenge as I couldn't really remember the songs, I couldn't catch the rhythm. And it was a play where I got a lot of support from the members. And our Nippon Budokan concert! It was tons of fun! It was a concert that reminded me just how much support we get from everyone.

Q3. Memories with the members

Shimizu Saki: Captain always helps me out. She'd call out to me during tough times, I think she's always keeping an eye out for the members.

Tsugunaga Momoko: When I was down in the dumps, in a rare move, Momo, who normally would never spend a penny on anyone, bought me my favourite drink...... Such a trivial thing made me so happy that it made me sob.

Tokunaga Chinami: Chii-chan keeps an eye out for things like our physical condition, and she'd go out of her way to send messages on the line of 'This part is tough, but let's do our best, okay'. That kind aspect of hers made me go up in tears (laughs).

Sudo Maasa: I remember the two of us, Maa-chan and I, going to a family restaurant, and talking about all sorts of things for quite a while. She's tolerant like a mother and always fusses over me.

Natsuyaki Miyabi: Miyabi would often give me counsel, give me advice. She's like an oneechan to me.

Kumai Yurina: When we were small, we appeared together in the movie 'Hotaru no Hoshi', but I'd always fight over the silliest things with Kumai-chan (laughs). I don't even remember what sort of things they were though....

Q4. I'd like to finally do this before our hiatus
I'd like to do the only things we can do at full blast. I want to spend the remaining time without any regrets.

Q5. The things that make you think 'I'm glad to have been in Berryz Kobo'
When we're having fun while messing around all-out!!! I think so particularly when we're holding a concert!
