Berryz Kobo x ℃-ute Cross Talk: Natsuyaki Miyabi x Hagiwara Mai

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hello! Project Kids in 2012, a book entitled Rival - 12 shoujo no 10-nen monogatari - (The 10-year legend of the 12 girls) was released. The book contains 2-page discussions between various pairings of the girls, covering all 66 possible combinations. In the process of reading this book, I'll be putting up some highlights as I read through the interviews.

Natsuyaki Miyabi X Hagiwara Mai

The interview opens with this remark from the interviewer: 'It's a fashion leader showdown!'

Miya starts by commenting about how Mai often used to wear skirts, but now they both prefer casual clothing. While the both of them do feel some pressure to keep up being fashionable, they've always been interested in fashion, even from a young age. Miya even remembers using the pocket money she got from her grandmother to buy clothes from the brand 'mezzo piano', which she wore to the H!P Kids auditions.

The two of them have way too many clothes, so Miya tries to hold back on spending and make use of the clothes she's got. No such thing for Mai, who still buys new stuff. Even when they were on tour together, every time Miya would meet her, MaiMai would be wearing something different.

--- Mai-chan, from your perspective, what sort of fashion worn by Miyabi-chan left an impression?

Hagiwara: She suits any sort of appearance. Every time I see her wear something normal, I think it's super cute, so my answer is 'everything' (laughs).

Natsuyaki: That's not the case at all (laughs). During the BeriKyuu concerts, Mai wore this fluffy, inflated skirt, and I thought you looked good even in that. You're cute and there are so many designs that suit you. I like Blythe dolls, and I collected clothes for those dolls, but Mai can wear clothes in the style that Blythe wears. To look like a doll, it's got to be skirts.

--- Now that we've stepped on that, if you were to coordinate one another, what sort of appearance would you like to make?

Hagiwara: Eh, outfitting Miya? That'd be impossible~ (laughs).

[...]

Hagiwara: During the BeriKyuu concerts, Miya would often do my hair and make-up. It was super-fun, so I definitely would like to be on the receiving end (laughs). It definitely would be impossible to coordinate for Miya! When it comes to fashion, I think that Miya's the crème de la crème, so it's unthinkable.

Natsuyaki: That isn't the case at all (laughs). Like, isn't Miya unstylish today? Isn't this just too simple (laughs)!?

Hagiwara: But I like it simple as well.

Natsuyaki: Today's is just too horrible. Because it looked like I'd be late for work, I just went for something that was adequate.

Hagiwara: It doesn't seem that way at all! Because it's Miya, anything goes!!

--- Since when have the two of you been interacting with one another?

Natsuyaki: During the BeriKyuu concerts, I guess. Unexpectedly, we've only begun to hold deep conversations relatively recently.

Hagiwara: Yup. We were on good terms up to then, but it's only recently that we've started chatting.

Natsuyaki: A long time ago, Mai was tiny, she was like a baby at first, so it was like 'Mai-cha~n!' But then, we went on with our Berryz Kobo and ℃-ute activities, when I'd meet her at Hello! Project concerts, the 2 of us made it a rule to not refer to one another with '-chan'. If we did so, there'd be a 100 yen penalty fee (laughs). As I would be referring to her as 'Mai', rather than 'Mai-chan' as I did in the past, for Miya, I was like 'Miyabi would be fine'. It was completely unfamiliar territory at first, the both of us paid penalty fees. So the penalty fee was meaningless, wasn't it (laughs).

Hagiwara: Even when Mai paid 100 yen, Miya would have to pay the next time, so it was the same 100 yen coin being passed around (laughs).

--- And with that, the both of you used your given names (laughs). Well then, what is the other person to you?

Hagiwara: It feels like she's an oneechan to me. Even when we're having meals, we have so much fun that we end up forgetting the time. As an oneechan and a friend, it's fun when we're together.

Natsuyaki: Miya thinks the same way too. I've got a younger brother but not a younger sister, so I think it'd be nice to have such a younger sister. I'd like to go shopping together.

Hagiwara: Shopping! Ya~y♪

--- Well then, as this is the fashion leader showdown, would you like to decide on who is the true fashion leader!?

Hagiwara: That would definitely be Miya!

Natsuyaki: Stop it, stop it (laughs).

Hagiwara: I seriously won't yield.

Natsuyaki: But for me, there are times when I've been thinking that my clothes today are lame (laughs). I think that Mai has none of that.

Hagiwara: No, I do I do I do (laughs). This is Miya's overwhelming victory. Because if you say it's Mai's win, the people reading this would never forgive me (laughs)!

Natsuyaki: Even when Mai doesn't have the time, I think that she's the type that doesn't cut corners, and properly dresses up. When Miya doesn't have the time like today, it's merely adequate (laughs). Also, I think that Mai's the type that bares her legs even when it's cold. For Miya, when it's cold, my legs definitely wouldn't be exposed (laughs).

Hagiwara: Ah, yeah, when there are clothes that I really want to wear no matter what, I might not even mind the cold. And at home, my mother's strict and gives me criticism. If I wear tights on cold days, she'd be like 'Too much tights!' But in Miya's case, she's stylish even without her legs exposed, she has this appearance of being adequately prepared to hang out.

Natsuyaki: Not at all~ (laughs)

Hagiwara: It'd be scary if she came out seriously. If she says that her dressing today is cutting corners, the real thing must be scary (laughs). It's definitely Miya's win!

Natsuyaki: Honestly, if I had known it would be like this, I would have said that I prepared properly today (laughs). At any rate, for today, it's my loss (laughs).
